President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter citing pressing family considerations.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country, commending his professionalism and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
The President said the appointment of Disu in an acting capacity was made in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country and in accordance with extant laws.
Tinubu expressed confidence that Disu’s experience and leadership would provide steady direction for the police during this critical period.
He added that, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, he would soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name would be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that the police remain professional, accountable and fully equipped to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
