A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the withdrawal of some of its chairmanship candidates from the upcoming Abuja Area Council elections, describing the development as “anti-democratic.”
In a statement on Friday, the party’s National Working Committee said it received reports of the withdrawals with “utter dismay,” warning that the trend reflects deeper issues within the party’s leadership.
The faction accused certain leaders of undermining internal democracy and alleged that such actions could set a dangerous precedent ahead of future elections, including the 2027 presidential poll.
The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
The reaction follows the withdrawal of the PDP chairmanship candidate for Bwari Area Council, Julius Adamu, who stepped down from the race in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Joshua Musa.
The development has stirred debate within the party over loyalty, internal cohesion and the conduct of its leaders ahead of the Federal Capital Territory elections.
