Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Saturday attended a joint meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Obidient Movement in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he called for unity and purposeful leadership in Nigeria.
The meeting, held on February 14 in the Akwa Ibom State capital, focused on strengthening collaboration among political stakeholders committed to national transformation.
Addressing participants, Obi emphasised the importance of unity, urging members and supporters to work together as one family toward the shared goal of building a new Nigeria.
He stated that the country must be led by leaders who are competent, compassionate, and committed to development. According to him, governance should prioritise security, education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and the creation of opportunities for young people.
Obi also advocated a shift in Nigeria’s political culture from what he described as “consumption” to “production,” stressing the need to harness the nation’s vast resources to generate sustainable wealth and prosperity for all citizens.
Highlighting the importance of integrity in public office, he said those who aspire to be called “honourable” must act honourably, those addressed as “His Excellency” must embody excellence, and those referred to as “distinguished” must live distinguished lives.
He maintained that renewing character and strengthening accountability are essential steps toward national progress.
The former Anambra State governor concluded by reiterating his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible” if citizens and leaders alike commit themselves to unity, responsible governance, and shared prosperity.
