Tinubu speaks with Anthony Joshua, offers condolences after Ogun road tragedy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reached out to Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua following the tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the former heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.

In a telephone conversation on Monday, President Tinubu personally conveyed his condolences to Joshua over the loss, wished him a speedy recovery, and offered prayers for his healing. The President said Joshua assured him that he is receiving quality medical care at the hospital.

President Tinubu also spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort. According to the President, she expressed deep appreciation for the call and the show of concern.

Additionally, the President contacted Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was with Joshua at the hospital. Governor Abiodun assured the President that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure the boxer receives the best possible medical attention.

Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently outside the country, had expressed his sympathy in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), describing the incident as deeply unfortunate. He praised Joshua’s courage, discipline, and patriotism, noting that the boxer has remained a source of national pride.

The President called for unity and mutual encouragement in moments of grief, while praying for strength and grace for Joshua and his family. He also prayed for the repose of the souls of the two associates who lost their lives in the accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
