President Tinubu Insists on Withdrawal of Police from VIPs, Orders Immediate Compliance

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday reaffirmed that his directive to withdraw police officers attached to VIPs, VVIPs and ministers remains firm and non-negotiable, warning all cabinet members to comply without delay.

Speaking at the opening of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House, Abuja, the President said the Nigeria Police Force must return to its core mandate of protecting citizens, especially the most vulnerable, rather than serving as personal security for select individuals.

“If you have any problem because of the nature of your assignments, please contact the IGP and get my clearance,” President Tinubu told ministers.

He directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure full implementation of the order. The President also announced that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will take over VIP protection duties, with arrangements to be coordinated by the Minister of Interior.

“The Civil Defence Corps is trained for VIP protection and they are armed too,” he said.

Tinubu noted that redeploying police officers to operational duties is critical to strengthening the fight against kidnapping, banditry and terrorism. He added that the entire security structure will be reviewed to better protect vulnerable communities.

The President also directed the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Muktar Maiha, to intensify efforts on the implementation of ranching reforms, particularly in conflict-prone areas.

“We must eliminate this area of conflict and make the livestock reform economically viable. Villages and communities facing conflicts must be salvaged,” he said.

The President stressed that proper ranching will reduce clashes between herders and farmers and enhance security across rural communities.
