The Kano State Executive Council has called for the investigation and arrest of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje over what it described as “inciting and reckless” comments on the state’s security situation.

At its 34th meeting held on Thursday, the council reviewed recent remarks by Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, in which they claimed Kano was becoming increasingly vulnerable to banditry and announced plans to recruit 12,000 members into a proposed religious police outfit known as Khairul Nas.

Briefing journalists on Friday, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the statements threatened to undermine ongoing security efforts by both the state and Federal Government.

According to him, the comments were followed within 48 hours by a bandit attack on border communities, raising concerns about whether the remarks were premeditated.

“We don’t know what Ganduje meant with those statements, so we are calling for his arrest. He must be investigated because we cannot allow anyone to destabilise the peace of our state,” Waiya said.

The government reaffirmed its support for security agencies and warned that no individual or group would be permitted to set up an illegal militia under any guise. It also urged political figures to avoid inciting statements, assuring residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and order.
