Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, has paid a solidarity visit to his predecessor and former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, following the armed attack on Ngige’s convoy last Wednesday.

Ngige’s convoy was ambushed by hoodlums operating along the Nkpor–Nnobi road. Although the former governor was not present during the attack, one passer-by was shot dead, and one of his police escorts was shot, disarmed, and stripped of his uniform. The injured officer has since undergone surgery and is reportedly recovering well.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Obi travelled to Alor in Idemili South Local Government Area—Ngige’s hometown—to personally express solidarity with the former minister, despite their long history of political rivalry.

Both leaders held a closed-door meeting during which Ngige recounted the events leading up to the attack. They also prayed for the repose of the deceased victim and wished the injured, including the police orderly and a nearby shop owner, a quick recovery.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, Ngige confirmed the fatality and described the incident as unfortunate.

Obi told reporters that his visit was simply to stand with Ngige in a moment of distress. “I’m happy he’s safe,” he said. “My own is just to thank God he’s safe and his security people are safe.”

Obi also expressed relief that the wounded were promptly evacuated and treated, adding that Ngige’s medical background helped ensure swift attention, especially at a time when doctors in Anambra State are on strike.

“I’m happy he’s in good health. That’s all I came to do,” Obi concluded.
