A Lagos-based non-governmental organisation, Honourable People Foundation, has reiterated its commitment to combating rape, sexual violence, and child trafficking across communities in Nigeria. The foundation, which began in 2015 with 10 members, has grown to over 50 active members dedicated to advocacy, education, and victim support.
Speaking during the introduction of the foundation, President of Honourable People Foundation, Hon. Mrs. Nwogu Assumpta Nkechi, said membership is open to married individuals who demonstrate a genuine passion for helping victims of sexual abuse and preventing exploitation. Applicants undergo a character screening and passion assessment before admission.
The foundation’s objectives include raising community awareness through religious institutions, clubs, and corporate bodies; implementing advocacy campaigns to reduce sexual violence and trafficking; and providing training to school administrators, teachers, and counselors on how to prevent and respond to sexual abuse cases. It also offers programmes for parents to help them understand warning signs and communicate effectively with their children about sexual safety.
A major component of the foundation’s work involves collaboration with government agencies, civil society organisations, and international partners to report cases and push for stronger legislation. Plans are underway to establish a rehabilitation and counseling centre to provide psychological and spiritual support to survivors.
According to Nkechi, the organisation has relied largely on personal contributions from members over the past five years, which has limited the scale of its operations. She appealed for support from government institutions, donor agencies, and well-meaning individuals to expand its public outreach, legal advocacy, and rehabilitation services.
“Our mission is noble and urgent,” she said. “We believe that with adequate support, we can restore dignity, hope, and safety to victims while strengthening communities against exploitation.”
