The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a total and indefinite nationwide strike beginning at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2025, after the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
In a statement signed by NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, the association said the decision followed a five-hour extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, during which members unanimously directed the National Officers Committee (NOC) to commence the strike over government’s failure to address long-standing demands.
Suleiman said the NEC had issued new marching orders, outlining minimum demands, strike monitoring directives, and a “No Work, No Pay/No Pay, No Work” resolution to ensure full compliance with the industrial action.
He added that all centre presidents and general secretaries had been instructed to convene emergency congress meetings to brief members on the NEC’s resolutions.
Accusing some elements within and outside the government of having “evil and exploitative plans for resident doctors,” Suleiman vowed that NARD members would resist any attempt to undermine their welfare or professional integrity.
Ahead of the strike, he urged doctors to responsibly hand over patients, engage traditional and community leaders, and sensitise the public about the reasons behind their action.
“Trust the process, believe in your leaders, and remain resolute,” he said, assuring members that the leadership would continue to pursue positive outcomes.
NARD is expected to release a detailed communiqué and hold a press conference outlining its key demands and reasons for the strike.
It will be recalled that the association earlier embarked on a five-day warning strike in September 2025, which was suspended after 24 hours to allow further engagement with the government.
