Brendan Rodgers has been warned his job at Celtic could be in danger following the club’s 3–1 defeat to Hearts.
The loss leaves Celtic eight points behind the league leaders, who remain unbeaten after nine games. The result continues a disappointing run for Rodgers’ side, with just two wins in their last seven matches — against Motherwell and Sturm Graz.
Injuries to key players Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston, coupled with a lack of major transfer support, have added to the manager’s frustrations. Rodgers recently compared his squad situation to “being handed the keys to a Honda Civic and told to drive it like a Ferrari.”
According to talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook, the Northern Irishman may decide not to renew his contract, which expires at the end of the season, potentially opening the door to a Premier League return.
Former Celtic star Micky Gray believes Rodgers might not last that long.
> “I think the writing could be on the wall for Brendan,” Gray told talkSPORT. “You can tell by his body language that he wants out. If things don’t improve soon, he might get his wish and be out of Celtic.”
Despite the pressure, Rodgers struck an optimistic tone in his post-match comments to BBC Scotland.
> “We have to remain positive. It’s only nine games in, and there’s still a long way to go,” he said. “We need determination and more quality in our play to turn things around.”
When asked about January transfer plans, Rodgers replied:
“That’s still a way off. We had a big opportunity in the summer and weren’t able to take it, so now we have to focus on the here and now.”
Celtic will be hoping to bounce back quickly to keep their title hopes alive and ease the mounting pressure on their manager.
