Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has raised concerns over possible sabotage within the security system after Boko Haram terrorists deployed a drone to attack soldiers in Mafa, Borno State.
Speaking during a visit to the affected area on Friday, the governor expressed shock that the attack occurred despite credible intelligence shared with relevant authorities beforehand.
“Honestly, we had credible intelligence that Mafa would be attacked, and it was duly circulated,” Zulum said. “There may be sabotage within that must be identified and addressed. We need cooperation between state and federal governments and the military to close these gaps.”
Zulum described the use of drones by terrorists as a new and dangerous dimension to Nigeria’s security challenges. “The proliferation of drones, particularly in the hands of non-state actors, poses a great concern for the entire country. We must act fast to stop their rampant use,” he said.
The governor urged the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s borders and airspace, calling for an urgent review of air defence capabilities to prevent future drone incursions.
He also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their resilience and called on residents to support security agencies with credible intelligence.
Meanwhile, the military confirmed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled multiple coordinated attacks across Borno and Yobe States, killing over 50 terrorists in Dikwa, Mafa, Gajibo, and Katarko.
