The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied receiving any invitation or subpoena to appear as a witness in the ongoing terrorism trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Wike made this clarification during his monthly media chat on Friday while reacting to media reports claiming that Kanu had listed him and other prominent Nigerians as witnesses in the case.
According to him, no court or authority has contacted him to testify, stressing that he cannot act based on mere newspaper reports.
“Nobody has asked me any questions. Nobody has subpoenaed me,” Wike said. “Because somebody said I am a witness doesn’t mean I should start running. If I am subpoenaed to give evidence, I must obey the court and appear. But not because I read it in the papers.”
The FCT Minister further stated that it is not his responsibility to inquire why his name might be mentioned in the case, adding that he would honour any official summons if called upon.
“You don’t ask the judge why you should be part of a case. If I am invited to come, go home and sleep — I will be there,” he assured.
