Nnamdi Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has confirmed that he remains in detention at Kuje Prison, 24 hours after his arrest during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Ejimakor assured supporters of his safety but expressed concern over how his case was handled by the police and the court.
He wrote: “I am safe and sound but still under custody at Kuje Prison. The Magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way.”
Ejimakor also alleged that the authorities deliberately took his case to a particular Magistrate Court in Kuje, bypassing several others in Abuja.
“For context: keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje,” he added.
Ejimakor was arrested alongside other protesters on Monday during a demonstration led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, calling for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticized Ejimakor’s participation in the protest, describing it as unethical for a lawyer representing a case still before the court.
Onanuga wrote on X: “I spotted Aloy Ejimakor among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore. As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, especially concerning Kanu’s ongoing treason trial. His duty should be to focus on the defence, not on street protests.”
