A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has called on members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) to spearhead efforts to rid the journalism profession of fake news and unprofessional practices.

Speaking at the 9th Annual Conference of GOCOP held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme “Reconciling Campaign Promises with Governance Realities: Challenges and Prospects,” Chief George lauded the association for its commitment to integrity and professionalism in digital journalism.

“I am extremely happy that GOCOP continues to grow stronger despite the odds. I have followed your activities since inception, and I am proud to be associated with a body of credible professionals,” he said.

He decried the rising infiltration of impostors and untrained individuals posing as journalists, warning that such practices threaten the credibility of the media and the nation’s democratic fabric.

Chief George also used the occasion to urge the federal government to improve the welfare of young Nigerians, lamenting that many have become victims of failed governance.

“There is no part of Nigeria that is not endowed. True democracy means utilizing resources for the benefit of the people. Leaders must remember that power is transient and that posterity will judge their actions,” he said.

The elder statesman cautioned against any calls for military intervention, stressing that the nation’s challenges can only be resolved through a strengthened democratic system.

“The civilian structure, though imperfect, allows for checks and balances through its three arms of government, unlike the military, which centralizes power,” he noted.

He further advocated for a comprehensive review of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to bolster public confidence and reinforce democratic institutions.

Chief George concluded by urging journalists to remain steadfast in upholding truth, ethics, and patriotism, emphasizing that credible journalism remains a cornerstone of democracy and national development.
