The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to begin delivering passports to applicants within one week, following the centralisation of passport production for the first time in 62 years.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of the newly established Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
He explained that while the old machines could only handle about 250 to 300 passports daily, the new system has the capacity to produce between 4,500 and 5,000 passports every day.
“With this, NIS can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation. We promised two-week delivery, but we are now pushing for one week,” the minister said, describing the development as a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo added that the project, which is fully completed, will enhance productivity, efficiency, and uniformity in line with global best practices, while also boosting the integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.
He stressed that the reform aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to transform public service delivery across key sectors.
