Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi says Nigerians should focus on what former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi plans to achieve if elected president for a single term, rather than on the duration of his tenure.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Farotimi argued that lasting impact does not require many years in office.
“I first heard this one-term idea from Peter Obi during the election cycle. It’s not about how long he wants to serve, but what he intends to do with that time. If I ever ran for president, I wouldn’t need more than two years to do what is necessary,” he said.
He criticised past leaders for failing to deliver meaningful progress despite longer tenures, citing Olusegun Obasanjo’s and Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administrations, and President Bola Tinubu’s two years in office.
Obi has repeatedly promised to serve only one four-year term if elected, a pledge he first made in June during a live X Space session. More recently, he proposed a single five-year term for Nigerian presidents, similar to South Korea’s model, where re-election is not allowed.
