Tragedy struck in Gombe State as four children and teenagers lost their lives in separate drowning incidents following recent heavy rainfall and flooding across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Gombe State Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the incidents in a statement on Tuesday. According to him, the drownings occurred in Hayin Kwarin-Misau, Bojude, Bajoga, and Difa communities, affecting the Akko, Kwami, Funakaye, and Yamaltu Deba Local Government Areas.

He noted that the victims were swept away by floodwaters while playing or attempting to cross rivers, erosion sites, and unprotected water channels.

“The Gombe State Police Command urges residents to exercise heightened caution during this rainy season, as accidental drownings continue to pose a serious public safety concern,” Abdullahi said.

The command warned against swimming in rivers and erosion channels, particularly during heavy rainfall when currents are unpredictable. Parents, guardians, and school officials were advised to monitor children closely and prevent them from playing near water bodies.

Residents were also urged to avoid flooded areas and report hazardous erosion sites or open drainage systems to relevant authorities.

The police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
