Former Kwara Governor and Minister, Cornelius Adebayo, Dies at 84

Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, former Governor of Kwara State and one-time Minister of Communications, has died at the age of 84.

A statement issued by the family on Tuesday announced his passing in the early hours of June 25, 2025. “With profound sadness but gratitude to God, we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo,” the announcement read.

Born on February 24, 1941, Adebayo led a distinguished life in academia and public service. He began his career as a lecturer at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), before entering politics as a Senator during Nigeria’s Second Republic.

He later served as Governor of Kwara State and was appointed Minister of Communications and Minister of Transportation during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, serving from 2003 to 2007.

Described as a man of integrity and commitment, Chief Adebayo was widely respected for his contributions to national development and governance.

Details of his funeral arrangements will be released by the family in due course.
