President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), on the occasion of his 83rd birthday, praising the elder statesman for his lifetime of service to Nigeria and his enduring legacy of peace and democracy.

In a statement released by the State House on Sunday, President Tinubu commended General Abubakar for his “decades of exceptional service” to the nation, both during his military career and in his continued efforts in retirement to promote stability and democratic governance across Africa.

The President particularly highlighted General Abubakar’s historic role in ushering Nigeria into the Fourth Republic in 1999, describing it as a “watershed moment in the nation’s history.” He lauded the retired general’s decision to hand over power to a civilian government after serving as military Head of State, calling it a “selfless act” that strengthened Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

“As Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abubakar has continued to play a significant role in promoting dialogue, defusing tension, and ensuring credible electoral processes in Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “His voice of moderation, reason, and statesmanship is deeply valued in a time where unity and leadership are more critical than ever.”

President Tinubu praised the former military leader as “a patriot of uncommon integrity,” whose service remains a source of inspiration to public servants across the country.

“As he marks another year of life, Nigeria honours his sacrifices, wisdom, and unyielding devotion to the peace and unity of our great nation,” the President added, wishing him continued strength, good health, and divine grace in the years ahead.

General Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1998 to 1999, is widely respected for his role in guiding the country through a crucial democratic transition. His post-retirement work with the National Peace Committee has further cemented his status as a key voice in Nigeria’s political landscape.
