In a bid to enhance safety and strengthen inland water transportation, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Thursday donated a significant number of life jackets to the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
The handover ceremony, held at LASWA’s headquarters at the Five Cowries Terminal in Lagos, underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to building a safe, efficient, and modern water transport system across the country—especially in Lagos, Nigeria’s busiest and most strategic waterways hub.
This initiative emphasizes the critical role of safety in the nation’s maritime transport sector, aligning with broader efforts to harness the vast opportunities within the blue economy.
The donation complements LASWA’s ongoing safety campaigns and reinforces Lagos State’s drive to ensure that all waterway users wear life jackets consistently.
As part of the event, LASWA conducted a live demonstration on the correct use of life jackets, accompanied by a robust public sensitization campaign. The exercise was carried out in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Marine Police, and officials from the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
The gesture not only symbolizes a strong partnership between federal and state agencies but also reinforces their shared mission to make Nigeria’s waterways safer, more accessible, and a reliable alternative to road transportation.
