Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has brushed off criticisms from opposition parties in the state, describing their actions as mere “noise” that does not distract him from his mandate.
Speaking while receiving Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, the member representing Bende North State Constituency who recently defected from the PDP to the ruling Labour Party, Otti said many opposition figures aren’t genuinely interested in contesting elections. According to him, some seek attention, others aim for negotiation leverage, while a few are simply trying to project themselves for future recognition.
“We are not concerned about the noise from the opposition,” Otti said. “A lot of people show up in elections for reasons other than winning—some for recognition, some for negotiations, and others to build a profile for the future. We don’t take such people seriously.”
Otti emphasized that his administration is more focused on delivering on its promises rather than engaging in political distractions.
“While people are making noise, we are responding with visible work across the state,” he noted. “Governance for us is about leadership and service, and we remain fully committed to that.”
Congratulating Hon. Ibekwe on his defection, Otti clarified that the decision was entirely voluntary and not influenced by external pressure. He reiterated that his administration prioritizes performance over political affiliation and is committed to inclusive governance.
The Governor added that the Labour Party welcomes new members without discrimination, confirming that Ibekwe would be given a formal reception and will enjoy full recognition as a ranking member of the party.
