Thirty-six members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, aligned with Mojisola Meranda, reaffirmed on Thursday that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker was final, declaring Meranda as the legitimate leader of the House.
The lawmakers gathered at the Assembly Garden, reiterating their support for Meranda following a vote of confidence on February 17, despite Obasa’s attempt to return.
Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, expressed disappointment over the ongoing situation and called for restraint.
“We are shocked by the current events unfolding here today,” Ogundipe said. “We expect the leadership, who previously urged us to remain calm, to address us and clarify where things went wrong.”
While maintaining their commitment to uphold the law, the lawmakers emphasized their individual mandates and the need for clear communication from the leadership.
“We are humiliated by these actions. I was blocked from entering the Assembly chamber, which is deeply embarrassing,” Ogundipe added. “This charade must stop. We’re not against the leadership, but we expect transparency. They should speak directly to us, not leave us in the dark with rumors.”
In a unified statement, the lawmakers declared: “We reject Obasa in totality.”
