In a series of impactful meetings on his Indonesia trip last week, , Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, continued to explore Indonesia’s transformative governance strategies, stressing the importance of data-driven policies for Nigeria’s sustainable growth.

Obi’s first session, held on February 3rd and 4th, began with Agung Laksono, a former Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy under Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. Laksono, who also served on the Presidential Advisory Board, shared valuable insights into the governance strategies that guided Indonesia’s remarkable transformation over the years. His focus on planning, execution, and measurable outcomes in critical areas impressed Obi, who believes such lessons could be key to Nigeria’s development.

Following this, Obi met with Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, Indonesia’s former Vice President, who served under both Presidents Yudhoyono and Widodo, marking him as the only individual in the country’s history to hold such a position under two different administrations. Kalla stressed the importance of focused commitment and decisive leadership, which, according to him, drove Indonesia’s achievements across all sectors during his tenure. Obi echoed these sentiments, suggesting that similar leadership in Nigeria could unlock the nation’s potential for growth.

Obi’s third engagement was with Yandri Susanto, Indonesia’s Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions. Susanto discussed the innovative policies under President Widodo’s administration aimed at advancing rural development. Through initiatives targeting education, healthcare, and small business support, the ministry has made significant progress in transforming villages from underdeveloped to self-sufficient communities. Obi commended these efforts, noting that Nigeria could replicate such a model by focusing on rural development, industrialization, and diversification of its economy.

In a statement following the meetings, Obi emphasized that the lessons learned during his time in Indonesia highlighted the importance of structured, data-driven policies to achieve inclusive and sustainable development. He called for a renewed focus on strategic execution and political will, believing these elements could help Nigeria achieve growth where no region is left behind.

Obi’s trip underscored his commitment to learning from successful governance models worldwide to build a stronger, more inclusive future for Nigeria.

“A New Nigeria is POssible!” Obi remarked, reinforcing his vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.
