The Abia State Ministry of Health has warned against unauthorized healthcare events, following reports of a recent unapproved medical outreach in the Abiriba area of Ohafia Local Government. The outreach, which involved the distribution of medications and the provision of healthcare services by uncertified individuals, was carried out without the necessary approval from the Ministry of Health.

According to preliminary reports, some of the medications distributed during the event have caused adverse drug reactions among recipients. Several victims of these adverse effects are currently receiving treatment at public health facilities across the state, where healthcare workers are doing their best to stabilize the affected individuals.

A statement signed by Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, Honorable Commissioner for Health said the Ministry expressed deep concern over the potential dangers posed by such illegal medical activities, warning that they could put the health and safety of Abians at serious risk. The Ministry emphasized that medical missions and healthcare outreach programs must be approved by the Office of the Commissioner for Health to ensure that they adhere to established health standards and protocols.

“The Ministry of Health is committed to safeguarding the well-being of Abia residents, and any medical mission conducted without official approval will be considered illegal,” stated Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, the Honorable Commissioner for Health in Abia State. “We are taking this matter very seriously, and those found responsible for these unlawful activities will face the full consequences under the law.”

The Ministry also called on well-meaning individuals, philanthropists, and organizations who wish to sponsor or partner in healthcare initiatives to ensure they obtain the necessary authorization before proceeding with any medical outreach in the state. This process ensures that health services provided to the public are safe, effective, and in line with the state’s healthcare standards.

In addition, the Ministry encouraged the public to report any suspicious or unauthorized medical events to the Ministry’s helpline at 08188520261, as part of efforts to curb illegal and harmful healthcare practices.

“We urge the people of Abia to remain vigilant and cautious of individuals or groups organizing unauthorized medical services,” said Prof. Uche. “To be forewarned is to be forearmed.”

The statement reiterated that the Abia State Government prioritizes the health and safety of its citizens and will continue to take necessary actions to prevent and address any healthcare violations.
