In response to widespread outrage over the arrest and arraignment of minors during the #EndBadGovernance protests in August, President Bola Tinubu announced on Monday the immediate release of all detained children.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement to State House reporters following the President’s swearing-in of seven new ministers approved by the Senate. Idris emphasized that the President’s order for release applies regardless of ongoing legal proceedings.

Additionally, President Tinubu instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure the welfare of the minors and facilitate their reunification with their parents or guardians across the country. He also called for the formation of a committee, led by the humanitarian affairs ministry, to address issues related to the minors’ arrest, detention, treatment, and release.

The situation escalated on November 1, 2024, when 72 minors were presented before a Federal High Court in Abuja, facing charges, including treason, for their involvement in the protests. They were arrested in various states, including Kaduna, Abuja, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano, with some appearing gaunt and fainting in court. Judge Obiora Egwuatu granted bail of N10 million to all 72 minors.

The public outcry included condemnation from former presidential candidates, civil society organizations, human rights activists, and regional groups, especially given that the minors had been detained for over eight weeks since the protests began.

In light of the backlash, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi issued a statement indicating that his office would review the situation to make an informed decision. He also directed the police to transfer the case file to his office and pass it to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation.
