Garba Muhammad, Regional Editor (North) of Nigeria’s authoritative newspaper, News Express, has emerged Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
He was cleared by the Credentials Committee alongside two others, namely, Al-Hassan Abdullahi Yahya of Gombe State Media Corporation (GMCTv), Gombe, and Dele Atunbi of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Abuja.
The three men will battle it out at the 8th Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the NUJ (Owerri 2024), scheduled to hold in the Imo State capital from November 26 to 28. The winner of the election, the expected highlight of the Conference, will take over the leadership of the NUJ from outgoing President, Chief Chris Isiguzoro, who is serving out his second term of office.
A veteran journalist with over 30 years experience cutting across some of Nigeria’s major newspaper houses, Garba Muhammad is a seasoned union leader, committed member of the NUJ and a champion of press freedom.
A strong advocate for improved journalists’ welfare, one of Garba’s primary objectives is to prioritise the welfare of journalists across Nigeria.
One of the things standing out in his favour is that he is the only independent journalist in the race. This, according to his supporters, makes him more likely to fight for journalists’ welfare without fear of victimisation.
