In today’s challenging economic landscape, the need for youth skill development is more urgent than ever. Divine Ihechimerem examines Nestlé Nigeria’s dedication to empowering young Nigerians through a range of skill development programmes.

A recent report by the African Development Bank (AfDB) says that 34.3% of employed Nigerians are poor due to low-skilled, low-paid jobs

According to the Nigeria Country Diagnostic Note (CDN) 2023, published in April 2024, “due to low productivity and involvement in low skilled and low-paid jobs, many workers in Nigeria are trapped in poverty. Between 2012 and 2022, the working poverty rate (those employed but are living below the poverty line) oscillated at around 35% for workers of the age of 15 or more.”

The report found a correlation between overall worker’s output and skills: “Declining labor productivity could also be a manifestation of skill mismatch, which is a major constraint for industrial development.”

Also recently, the Industrial Training Fund(ITF) reported that Nigeria was filled with unskilled labour. This was at the National Assembly during debate in a bill sponsored by ITF to widen the scope of its  operations regarding provision of skills training in management for technical and entrepreneurial development in the public and private sectors of the economy.

In these noble initiatives , Nestlé Nigeria has emerged as a beacon of hope, committing over N6 billion to upskill young Nigerians. Divine Ihechimerem writes on This investment represents a steadfast dedication to fostering the next generation of skilled professionals poised to drive the nation’s industrial future.

Nestlé Needs YOUth: A Broader Initiative

Nestlé’s commitment to youth empowerment is encapsulated in its broader initiative, “Nestlé Needs YOUth,” launched in 2013. This programme focuses on four critical pillars: getting youth hired, skilled, supported, and providing them with more opportunities. With an impressive reach of approximately 25,000 young people annually, Nestlé is not only addressing immediate employment needs but also preparing youth for long-term career success.

It says: Our goal is to enable 10 million young people worldwide to access economic opportunities by 2030 through employment, agripreneurship, and entrepreneurship.

“Young people are central to regeneration and our future. They will be the entrepreneurs and innovators of tomorrow, as well as the next generation of farmers who will sustainably feed our growing population. Their fresh ideas, diverse perspectives, and energy benefit not only their communities but also Nestlé. By equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed, we can enhance their economic circumstances and foster social development in their communities.”

Shakiru Lawal, Country Human Resources Manager at Nestlé Nigeria, highlighted the significance of these initiatives, stating, “We are playing our part to cushion the impact of economic challenges on the youth and prepare them for the future.” Programmes like the Nesternship and the Nestlé Youth Development Programme exemplify this commitment, providing comprehensive support and training.

The Technical Training Centres

Nestle does not only live by words but by deeds. At the heart of Nestlé Nigeria’s initiative are its Technical Training Centres (TTCs). In August this year, the graduation of ten young trainees from the Agbara TTC, marked a significant milestone in this ongoing journey.

These graduates completed an intensive 18-month programme seamlessly blending theoretical knowledge with practical engineering training. Their efforts culminated in obtaining the prestigious City and Guilds of London Technicians’ Certification, a qualification that substantially boosts their employability.

This year alone, the Agbara TTC has produced 30 graduates, contributing to over 190 skilled professionals since the programme’s inception. Remarkably, 97% of these graduates have secured employment with Nestlé Nigeria, underscoring the initiative’s effectiveness and positive impact on the local job market.

Exuding confidence and proud of the achievements and contributions of Nestle in this regard, Wassim Elhusseini, Managing Director/CEO of Nestlé Nigeria, spoke passionately at the graduation ceremony: “Our investment in upskilling these bright young minds over the last 13 years reflects our firm belief in the potential of the next generation.” He emphasized that bridging the technical skills gap not only enhances youth employability but also empowers them to achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

This event underscored the company’s ongoing commitment to equipping Nigerian youth with essential technical skills. Since its launch in 2023, the Flowergate TTC has contributed to the training of over 200 young Nigerians, further solidifying Nestlé’s role as a leader in youth empowerment.

Elhusseini praised the graduates, noting that this year, Nestlé graduated 70 skilled professionals across its centers, emphasizing that the programme extends beyond mere skill acquisition. “Their success reaches beyond personal gain—it strengthens families, communities, and the industry,” he stated.

The graduation ceremony at Flowergate attracted notable figures from various sectors, including traditional rulers and representatives from professional organizations. Their presence highlighted the community’s support for Nestlé’s initiatives and the shared belief in the importance of empowering youth.
