The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has cautioned the federal government that the recent rise in petrol prices will exacerbate poverty among workers. The TUC criticized the increase, claiming it was executed without consulting key stakeholders, and accused the government of neglecting the well-being of the Nigerian populace, especially the working class who will suffer the most from such measures.
In a statement, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo urged the government to reverse the decision immediately, strengthen the naira, and implement policies to ease the hardships faced by Nigerians. He emphasized the need for swift action to restore confidence and prevent further decline in living conditions.
The TUC expressed deep concern over the price hike, stating it will severely impact all aspects of social and economic life, especially given the existing hardships. The union also criticized the recent 250% increase in electricity tariffs, which disproportionately affects the poorest, and highlighted a lack of empathy and meaningful social security measures from the government.
The statement questioned why ordinary Nigerians should bear the brunt of rising costs while those in power enjoy increased benefits. It also pointed out that the government has not made significant efforts to cut costs or improve the naira’s value despite previous recommendations from the TUC.
The Congress reiterated its support for workers struggling with inflation, high living costs, and poor working conditions. The TUC warned that the new fuel and electricity price hikes will worsen these issues, leading to greater hardship and possible social unrest.
The TUC remains dedicated to defending workers’ rights and will continue advocating for social justice, fair wages, and improved work environments.
