The Nigerian Supreme Court has mandated all 36 State Governors to submit their defenses within seven days regarding a lawsuit brought forth by the Federal Government, which aims to secure full autonomy for the 774 local governments nationwide.

Additionally, the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has been instructed to respond within two days after receiving the states’ defenses. Justice Garba Lawal, leading a seven-man panel, issued this directive, considering the national urgency of the case and the absence of objections from the Attorneys General of the states. The Court emphasized the importance of timely completion of all legal processes, setting June 13 for the hearing. Furthermore, it ordered fresh hearing notices to be served to the eight states whose Attorneys General were absent during the proceedings: Borno, Kano, Kogi, Niger, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, and Sokoto.
