The House of Representatives has passed a bill mandating the reinstatement of the old National Anthem, “Nigeria we hail thee.”
The bill, sponsored by Julius Ihonvbare, was approved after thorough deliberation. It stipulates that the anthem be performed at various national events and prohibits any alteration of its lyrics. Additionally, it requires the Ministry of Information to standardize its performance and record an official version to be published on government websites. The bill also mandates the teaching of the anthem in schools, with its second stanza designated as the national prayer.
During the debate, proponents argued that embracing the old anthem would inspire unity and determination among citizens. However, some members expressed concerns, questioning the relevance and historical significance of reverting to the old anthem. Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda argued against the bill, emphasizing the need for legislative actions to reflect the country’s aspirations and progress. Similarly, Ahmed Satomi, Chairman of the House Committee on National Security and Intelligence, opposed the bill, suggesting that reinstating the old anthem would not address the nation’s pressing issues.
