72-year-old Francis Dooga alleged to be a retired soldier has reportedly hung himself on a tree in his Makurdi residence near Saint Joseph Catholic Church Nyiniongun, in the ourskirts of the state capital.
It was gathered that the septuagenarian fondly called ‘old soldier’ allegedly committed suicide Sunday evening when members of his family were away from home.
According to a neighbour who claimed that they alerted the Police when the lifeless body of the deceased was seen hanging on the tree in his compound at about 6pm on Sunday, he had in recent time been complaining of hardship.
He said, “the body of ‘old soldier’ was seen hanging on the tree in his house at about 6pm on Sunday. It was a rude shock for everyone.
“Though some persons were saying he was recently complaining of hardship and not being able to take care of his needs and cater for his children and dependants.
“There was also the rumour that he was swindled of his pension money by criminals while others were saying he was complaining bitterly that he was not receiving his pension in due time and it affected him badly.
“These were stories that were flying all over the place but no one can precisely say why the old man took his own life. But we believe that the police will also investigate to find out what actually happened.
“No one can rule out anything at this moment until investigstion is concluded by the police and the cause of his death is known.”
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent, SP, Catherine Anene who confirmed the incident said investigation was ongoing. @Vanguard
