At. Least 2 persons have reportedly died after series of explosions rocked Ibadan late Tuesday, with the Oyo State government saying it has taking full control of the situation.
Daily Review Online checks revealed that hospitals are filled with victims while some residents are currently trapped in the rubble of buildings which caved in.
This has resulted in a state of confusion across the Oyo State capital.
Among the areas affected by the incident, which reportedly led to loss of lives and properties, late Tuesday, are Bodija, Agbowo, Eleyele, and Orogun.
Social media users have shared videos and pictures of large-scale destruction affecting filling stations, malls, fast food outlets and residential building.
A resident who spoke with Daily Review Online said the cause was not known but that a lot of people died.
“It is true but no one can actually comment on the cause of this strange incident.”
In a video uploaded online, a pick-up van with inscription Bodija Patrol Service was seen conveying corpses.
At least three bodies were seen inside the van which waded to a crowded street.
“Jesus! Jesus!” a male voice was heard screaming as people gathered in groups to discuss the incident.
A residential building was said to have caved in at Eleyele part of the ancient city, leaving residents trapped.
The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, was affected.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State government says it has taken full control of the situation.
Reacting in a statement, Prince Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, said the situation was under control.
“Residents of Ibadan and immediate environ experienced an uncommon explosion about 8pm this evening.”
“There are various interpretations of the incident but it is important for us to state categorically that the state government has taken over and in the full control of the unfortunate occurrence in in order to mitigate the incident.
“All security service chiefs including para military chiefs and Fire Operatives have been deployed by the governor to reign in the spillover from the explosion.
“His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde therefore implores citizens to calm down and be rest assured that their interests are being looked after.”
