Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney announced on Friday his resignation as Derby County head coach.
Rooney is leaving troubled Derby County, who relegated to League One last season, one year to the end of his contract.
“Over the course of the Summer I have been closely following developments regarding the ownership of Derby County.
“Today I met with the administrators to inform them of my decision that it was time for me to leave the club. In fairness to them, they tried tremendously hard to change my decision but my mind was made up,” Rooney said in a statement.
Rooney, 36, joined Derby County in the 2020/201 season, following the sack of Phillip Cocu.
The former Manchester United striker’s resignation comes the same day that property developer, David Clowes, announced a bid to take over the club after buying Derby’s Pride Park Stadium.
