Cristiano Ronaldo became football’s all-time top goalscorer as he scored a hat-trick to help Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
That win put Ralf Rangnick’s side into fourth spot in the Premier League, two points above Arsenal who have four games in hand.
Ronaldo enjoyed a record-breaking night at Old Trafford
They didn’t have it all their own way, however, with Tottenham causing plenty of problems including a first half penalty that was converted by Harry Kane and an own goal from Harry Maguire to put the hosts on edge.
However Ronaldo stole the show as his trio of goals put him above Josef Bican to write his name firmly in football history.
Final score: Manchester United 3 Tottenham 2
Roy Keane believes that Manchester United need Cristiano Ronaldo, saying that they’re a better team with him involved.
He said: “You need Cristiano Ronaldo in your team when he’s playing like that.
“Has Ronaldo been at his absolute best this season? Probably not he’s missed a few chances, but I still think that if Ronaldo’s in your team, whatever way you’re set up, you’ve got a chance of winning football matches.
“He’s got to get better players around him and it’s a big decision about the manager but I still think that Ronaldo, even at this age, if he’s playing week in week out at United, he will produce for you.
“He’s done it all through his career.
“Today his general play was pretty average but football is about big moments and Ronaldo has done that for the 15 years and he produces moments.
“He could do it for another season at Man United.”
Gary Neville believes that the future of Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United will be decided by the player and not the club at the end of the season.
He said: “There’s this looming decision at the end of the season, is Cristiano Ronaldo going to be at Manchester United next season? Will Manchester United keep him?
“It’s not in their gift, Cristiano Ronaldo will make that decision.
“He’s got another year left on his contract, it’s whether he wants to be here, if it’s a project that he believes in and whether he’s enjoying it.
“I think that his greatness and the fact that he wants his career to be enjoyable – he’s obviously demanding, he wants to win every game.
“There’s this element of what he can’t do and we’ve contributed to that – I’ve contributed to that if Man United want to be a high-pressing team with lots of energy up front then he’s probably not your man, but he’ll make the decision about whether he stays at Man United next season, not the other way around.”
