Lionel Messi future: PSG most likely to land Argentina superstar with Manchester United and Man City among favourites as Barcelona announce shock exit
It was announced on Thursday that the Argentine superstar would not be continuing at the Nou Camp after ‘financial and structural obstacles’ prevented him from signing a new deal.
A statement on the Catalan giants’ official website said: “Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).
“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona.”
The statement continued: “Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
“FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.”
The news has sent shockwaves around the football world, but the question on everyone’s lips is: “Where will he go next?”
Betfair have drawn up a list of his next potential club and it’s interesting to say the least.
PSG, who already boast superstars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in their ranks, has been priced as the most likely destination for the 34-year-old at odds of 10/11.
The French giants have long been linked with a move for the superstar, particularly last summer when he expressed his desire to leave.
