Chairman of Media Trust, Kabiru Yusuf, has been elected president of Newspaper Proprietors of Nigeria, NPAN.
The election was conducted at the association’s secretariat in Maryland, Lagos on Tuesday.
The association consists all newspaper owners across the country.
Media Trust, which Yusuf chairs, publishes Daily Trust, Daily Trust on Saturday, Daily Trust on Sunday, Tambari, YouthVille, Kilimanjaro among other titles.
Yusuf was elected unopposed at the 2020 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Association which held in Lagos, following a nomination by the outgoing President, Nduka Obaigbena, seconded by the publisher of The Source Magazine, Comfort Obi.
The publisher of Guardian newspaper, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru emerged the Deputy President at the meeting while the publisher of BluePrint newspaper, Mohammed Idris was elected the General Secretary of the association.
Other executives that emerged are the publisher of The Nations Newspaper, Walter Edun as Treasurer; Dr. Mrs.Mwadiuto Iheakanwa of the Champions newspaper as Publicity Secretary while the Managing Director of Daily Times, Fidelis Anosike emerged Assistant Secretary of the association.
Also, the publisher of The Pilot, Prince Dannis Sami; publisher of Leadership newspaper, Sam Nda-Isaiah and Ray Ekpu, a past president of the association were nominated without opposition as ex-officios.
The outgoing president, Obaigbena was also elected as life patron to enable the association continue to benefit from his wealth of experience.
In his speech, the new President, Yusuf commended the outgoing executives, saying, they have laid a very good foundation for the association.
“They have succeeded in getting a secretariat we can call our own. We are going to build on that by giving the NPAN a very good and functioning secretariat,” he said while he sought the cooperation of all members in steering the affairs of the association.
