Bayern Munich eased into the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday evening with a goalless draw against Sevilla in the one last-eight tie that was never in doubt.
The newly-crowned Bundesliga winners blocked out a Sevilla side needing two away goals to turn the tie around, completing a comfortable 2-1 aggregate victory.
It was a different story on the night, though, as the Bavarians failed to score for the first time in 22 home matches in Europe in a game that failed to live up to the billing of the other second legs.
James Rodriguez started for Bayern after his impressive performance from the bench in southern Spain while midfielder Ever Banega returned from suspension in the place of Guido Pizarro.
Robert Lewandowski, Rafinha and several others were left eating turf amid a right tussle of a first half in which Arjen Robben had the pick of the opportunities.
Bayern should have been 1-0 up after Rafinha did brilliantly to drive down the left and float in a perfectly-weighted cross to the back post, where Robert Lewandowski was there to meet it.
That was a huge left-off for Sevilla who fought hard, knowing they needed to score twice, but they were unable to give Sven Ulreich a real examination in goal.
Sevilla’s wait for a first-ever Champions League semi-final will have to go on after failing to repeat the damage done to Manchester United in the previous round.
Having claimed the German bragging rights with five games to spare, Jupp Heynckes’s side are once again in contention for the treble and have now won eight straight Champions League games.
