Former president General Abdulsalam Abubakar, on Tuesday met with President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The former president, however, did not say why he was at the villa or what he discussed with President Buhari.
However, a source close to the former President said General Abubakar had discussed issues of “national importance” with the President, including the growing insecurity in the middle belt as a result of the activities of Fulani herdsmen.
The source added that General Abubakar also advised the President to reconsider his stand on 2019, insisting that it would be to the interest of the country if he should drop his second term ambition.
It would be recalled that Abubakar as National Chairman of the National Peace Committee for the 2015 General Elections, had helped midwife a smooth transition of power to Buhari from former President Goodluck Jonathan.
It had also met with President Muhammadu Buhari in August 2015, during which it expressed its concerns about the style of the administration’s anti-corruption campaign, warning that Nigeria was no longer under military rule.
The Committee had again in August 2016 met with President Buhari, at the Presidential Villa, where Abubakar later told newsmen that his Committee was working quietly behind the scene to ensure amicable resolution of the various crisis in the country.
