MORE PEOPLE are becoming Muslims – and fewer people are becoming members of the Church of England, new research shows.
There was a dramatic 1.7million fewer people who identified themselves as being part of the Church of England between 2012 and 2014, and a million more Muslims, according to a survey from the NatCen Social Research institute.
Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey said he saw the figures as a matter of urgency.
He said: “These figures are a call to urgent mission.
“I have no doubt at all that the Archbishops, together with the whole leadership of the Church of England, are doing all they can to reverse this trend.”

The annual NatCen’s British Social Attitudes Survey paints a sorry picture for those who follow the established branch of Christianity.
In the survey from 1983, 40 per cent of British people considered themselves as being Anglican, compared to 17 per cent last year.
In contrast, 4.7 per cent of people who say they are Muslim, up by 3.2 per cent in 2004.
The most successful branch of Christianity was Catholicism, which saw a relatively small decline from ten per cent to eight per cent over the last thirty years.
NatCen’s Naomi Jones told the Mail on Sunday one of the reasons for the CofE’s decline was that fewer people considered Christianity as part of their British identity.
A spokesman for the Church said: “The survey figures are based on a less reliable sample than in the National Census in 2011, which showed almost 60 per cent of those questioned self-identified as Christian.”
