It was a harvest of disgrace for three Premiership sides as they were knocked out of the 4th round of the English FA cup.
League leaders Chelsea blew a 2-0 lead to League One side Bradford City at home to lose 4-2. There were enough first-team players in that side to make it embarrassing.
Billion-plus dollar Manchester City lost 2-0 to Championship resident Middlesbrough at home, fielding more or less a first team.
Third place Southampton went down 3-2 to Crystal Palace.
The Leicester City Foxes, bottom in the EPL with just four wins from 22 matches, dispatched Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane.
Yesterday, Manchester United drew 0-0 with League Two club Cambridge United. Liverpool (vs. Bolton) and Arsenal (vs. Brighton) could still add to the malaise.
Jose Mourinho has admitted that Chelsea must feel “ashamed” and embarrassed after suffering a “beautiful” FA Cup giant-killing at the hands of Bradford City.
While he was highly critical of his side in the aftermath of what he described as a ‘disgraceful’ defeat, Mourinho was appreciative of the magic of the FA Cup and credited Bradford for their “fantastic” achievement.
“What happened is football and football is beautiful,” he told BBC Sport. “I think this is the beauty of football where a much better team can lose, which is difficult to happen in another sport and more possible to happen here in this country and this sport.
“The small team mentality is special. My respect goes to that and to them, they did a fantastic history for them and their club.
“I repeat a word I used before this match – It’s a disgrace for a big team to lose to a small team from a lower team. We must feel ashamed, me and the players must feel ashamed. Frustration is not the right word, embarrassed would be more appropriate.”
Gary Cahill and Ramires had put the Blues 2-0 ahead before Jon Stead pulled one back for the visitors, and further goals from Filipe Morais, Andy Halliday and Mark Yeates ended Chelsea’s hopes of the quadruple this term.
