(L-R) Dr. Tony Okam, Chairman of the Board, National Hospital, Abuja, Chief Willie Obiano, Governor, Anambra State and Dr. Jeff Momoh, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee during Governor Obiano’s visit to the victims of the Nyanya Bomb Blast at the National Hospital, Abuja …Thursday.
Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has paid a visit to the National Hospital, Abuja, to commiserate with the victims of the recent bomb blast in Nyanya, in the outskirts of the Nigerian capital.
Moved by the tales of agony and suffering that have permeated the country in the aftermath of the Nyanya blast, Governor Obiano visited the hospital, Thursday, to meet the casualties first hand and offer words of encouragement to them.
The governor who was received by the Chairman of the Board of Management of the hospital, Dr. Tony Okam and the Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Azi C. N quickly went round the wards, cheering the victims on their sick beds and assuring them of the support of the government and the goodwill of Nigerians.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Chief Obiano wondered why innocent Nigerians who are trying to make a meaning out of the various challenges of nation-building should become cheap targets of terror attacks and other merchants of violence.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to maintain a high level of vigilance in their daily lives, pointing out that the demands of the times require a great deal of security awareness and the collective participation of everyone on issues of security and threat to life.
The governor further expressed deep concerns on the growing threat of violent crimes to the peace of mind of Nigerians and revealed that his one month-old administration had declared a war on criminals in Anambra State.
“We have declared a war against criminals and other enemies of the state who have slashed down the degree of freedom Nigerians used to enjoy in the past and replaced it with fear in Anambra State. We have been rounding them up from their hideouts and cleaning out their strongholds. Just the other day, the largest supplier of firearms to criminals in Anambra State was arrested. We are targeting their command and control bases and cutting off their supply routes,” Governor Obiano further explained.
Since he assumed power as the governor of Anambra State, Chief Obiano has made security a top priority of his administration, imposing a severe crackdown on criminals, rounding many of them up for prosecution and driving many out of the state.
Responding to the governor’s remarks, the Chairman of the Board of National Hospital, Dr Tony Okam thanked Obiano for his visit and further observed that his kind words and morale support would help re-assure the victims that Nigerians had not abandoned them in their hour of need.
