The Police Command in Kano on Thursday confirmed that four workers of Kano Tans Leather Factory, drowned while trying to evacuate industrial waste from the company’s sewage treatment plant.
The command’s spokesman, ASP Magaji Majiya, who confirmed the incident, said the workers died evacuating the sewage effluence at the company premises about 8:15 a.m.
“The deceased were certified dead by a medical doctor at the Murtala Muhammed Hospital, Kano,’’ he said.
Majiya said their corpses would undergo an autopsy while investigation had since commenced.
The the company is located in Challawa Industrial Area in Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.
Eye witness told NAN that the incident occurred at 7:50 a.m. and majority of the workers had not reported for work.
According to the witness, in the process of trying to evacuate the waste materials, one of the workers slipped off the ladder and fell inside the 30 feet sewage.
The witness said that the other three workers were on a rescue mission and died in the process.
