On Global Handwashing Day, UNICEF underscored the crucial role of hand hygiene in safeguarding public health and curbing the spread of infectious diseases.

Maureen Zubie Okolo, Officer in Charge at UNICEF’s Enugu field office, spoke at a zonal press briefing in Enugu, organized in collaboration with the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State. The event, themed “Why Are Clean Hands Important,” emphasized handwashing’s significance for health and well-being.

Okolo noted, “Handwashing is fundamental to disease prevention, helping to stop the transmission of illnesses such as diarrhea, respiratory infections, Ebola, cholera, and COVID-19. UNICEF is committed to supporting national handwashing initiatives and has integrated hand hygiene into programs in over 90 countries. In partnership with the World Health Organization, we also monitor handwashing practices in households, schools, and healthcare facilities.”

She urged governments, donors, suppliers, businesses, and academics to prioritize hand hygiene efforts.

In her welcome address, Ms. Chika Mbah, Acting Managing Director of the Enugu State Ministry of Water Resources (ENRUWASSA), represented by Chioma Dick Emmanuel, described handwashing as a vital intervention for disease prevention and health promotion, particularly for children and pregnant women.

“We must acknowledge that effective solutions often lie in our daily routines. By promoting proper hand hygiene, we can significantly reduce the incidence of preventable diseases and protect our schools and communities,” she stated.

“This year’s theme emphasizes handwashing not only as a health safeguard but also as a tool for empowerment. We aim to inspire everyone—children, adults, and communities—to adopt this life-saving practice. I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to UNICEF for their support and partnership in promoting health and hygiene. Together, we can create a lasting impact,” she added.
