Senegal has filed an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip them of their Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco.

CAS confirmed receipt of the appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation, which is seeking to overturn CAF’s ruling and be reinstated as champions of the 2026 tournament.

The controversy stems from the AFCON final played on January 18, where Senegal defeated Morocco 1–0 after extra time. However, CAF later ruled that Senegal forfeited the match after their players briefly walked off the pitch in protest against a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

Following Morocco’s appeal, CAF converted Senegal’s victory into a 3–0 loss, citing a breach of competition rules, and declared Morocco champions.

CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb said the tribunal would handle the case expeditiously while ensuring a fair hearing for all parties.

The disputed moment occurred deep into stoppage time when Moroccan forward Brahim Diaz was awarded a penalty after a VAR review by referee Jean-Jacques Ndala. The decision sparked protests from Senegalese players, leading to a temporary halt in the match.

After play resumed, Diaz missed the penalty, and Senegal eventually secured victory through an extra-time goal by Pape Gueye.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has expressed support for the appeal process, stating that the body would respect whatever decision CAS reaches.

Meanwhile, Gianni Infantino had earlier criticised the conduct of Senegalese players during the final, describing the scenes as unacceptable.

Both teams are now preparing for international friendlies ahead of upcoming global competitions.
