Ademola Lookman opened the scoring in a thrilling Madrid derby, but his early effort was not enough as Real Madrid fought back to secure a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in a pulsating La Liga clash on Sunday.

Lookman, who has been in fine form since his winter move, put Atletico ahead in the 33rd minute after a clever assist from Giuliano Simeone. The Nigerian forward calmly finished to register his fifth goal for the club.

However, Madrid responded strongly after the break, inspired by Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian winger equalised from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute before midfielder Federico Valverde gave the hosts the lead shortly after.

Atletico briefly drew level through Nahuel Molina, but Vinícius struck again in the 72nd minute with a curling effort to seal the win for Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The victory keeps Madrid firmly in the title race, closing the gap on leaders Barcelona, while Atletico will rue missed opportunities despite a bright start led by Lookman.

Madrid had to endure a tense finish after Valverde was sent off late in the game, but they held on to secure all three points in front of their home fans.
