Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing internal crises within the party and the need to safeguard the interests of Kano residents. His resignation takes effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.
The governor, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the platform it provided him since 2022, while noting that persistent disputes and legal challenges have weakened party cohesion.
“After careful reflection, and with the interest of the people of Kano State in mind, I have concluded that resigning from the NNPP is the best course of action,” the statement read.
Governor Yusuf’s decision follows days after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, fueling speculation that he is set to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sources say the move is part of a broader political realignment in Kano State.
Alongside the governor, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen are also resigning from the NNPP.
The resignation was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who commended Yusuf for his achievements in infrastructure, health, education, and economic empowerment during his tenure.
“This decision is accepted with regret, but we recognize the contributions of one of the NNPP’s most performing governors,” Zubairu said.
