Residents of Dei-Dei in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, were thrown into shock following the death of a 27-year-old woman, Esther Akwaji, under mysterious circumstances.
Akwaji reportedly collapsed and died while at her boyfriend’s residence. The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, is said to have fled shortly after the incident, prompting a police investigation.
The deceased, a resident of Nasarawa State, had travelled to Abuja to visit family members. On January 21, she left her family’s home, informing relatives that she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei. She did not return.
Later that night, a man who identified himself as her boyfriend reportedly contacted the family using her mobile phone. He claimed that Esther had visited him and that while they were eating, she suddenly took ill. He said she was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.
The man reportedly left the hospital shortly after doctors pronounced her dead and has since remained unreachable.
Confirming the incident, the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the matter was reported on January 22 at about 11:00 a.m. by one Mr. Peter Akwaji, who identified himself as the deceased’s brother.
Adeh said police operatives from the Dei-Dei Division immediately proceeded to Kubwa General Hospital, where the body was recovered and deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
She added that discreet investigations are ongoing and efforts are being made to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect.
The police assured members of the public that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure a thorough investigation and that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
