The Federal Government has constituted a technical committee to fast-track the launch of an indigenous airline for Edo State.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, announced the decision during a courtesy visit by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to advance discussions on activating a state-backed airline to operate from Benin Airport.
Governor Okpebholo stressed the urgency of establishing a homegrown airline, describing aviation as a critical driver of economic revival, investment inflow, and job creation in the state. He disclosed that the Edo State Government is already exploring partnership options, including engagements with South African investors who have indicated interest in providing aircraft for the commencement of operations.
“If I have my way, I want this airline to kick off immediately. Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy and reposition Benin as a major aviation hub,” the governor said.
Welcoming the initiative, Keyamo described the proposal as timely and noted that the ministry has also been engaging potential investors attracted by the commercial viability of Benin Airport.
The minister recalled the historical significance of Benin Airport, which once served as a major hub during the operations of the defunct Okada Air, adding that there was no reason the airport could not reclaim that status.
To ensure swift progress, Keyamo requested the nomination of a liaison officer by the Edo State Government to work directly with the Director of Air Transport Management at the ministry on coordination, regulatory compliance, and operational planning.
According to him, the technical committee will submit weekly progress reports, with the aim of making Benin Airport fully operational for expanded commercial activities between the first and second quarters of the year.
