Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party(LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to the Mother of Mercy College of Nursing Sciences, Mbutu-Okohia, Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, to support the institution’s ongoing development.

Obi made the donation during a return visit to the college, fulfilling a promise he made a few weeks earlier when he capped the institution’s pioneer nursing students. Addressing the students, he underscored the growing global demand for healthcare professionals, warning that the world is projected to face a serious shortage of healthcare workers by 2030.

He noted that by choosing nursing, the students had positioned themselves among the most relevant professionals of the future. Obi encouraged them to see themselves as global citizens who can excel anywhere in the world while remaining connected to Nigeria and committed to its development.

According to him, his support for the college is driven by a passion to see young Nigerians succeed, stressing that money only has true value when it is used to uplift those in need. He expressed confidence in the students’ bright future and their potential to become major contributors to society.

The Mother of Mercy College of Nursing Sciences has recorded key milestones, including full accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the commencement of its Basic Nursing Programme with a dedicated academic team.

Obi also commended the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy (DMMM) Congregation for its sustained investment in education and healthcare, describing faith-based institutions as critical to strengthening Nigeria’s social and moral foundations. He urged the students to uphold discipline, compassion, and integrity, noting that nurses remain the backbone of every functional healthcare system.
