President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), extending his tenure for another five years.
Marwa, who first assumed office in January 2021 following his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now continue in the role until 2031. His renewed mandate underscores the administration’s confidence in his leadership and the agency’s progress in combating drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
Before joining the NDLEA, Marwa chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020, helping to shape nationwide policy reforms. The Adamawa-born retired military officer previously served as military governor of Lagos and Borno States, and held several key positions in the Nigerian Army, including Aide-de-Camp to former Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Theophilus Danjuma, and Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Marwa’s academic credentials include a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
Under his leadership, the NDLEA has recorded significant achievements, including the arrest of 73,000 drug traffickers and barons and the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of hard drugs. The agency has also intensified public sensitisation campaigns to curb drug abuse, especially among young people.
President Tinubu, in reaffirming his support, described the reappointment as “a vote of confidence” in Marwa’s efforts. “I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs out to destroy our people, especially the young ones,” the President said.
The announcement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on Thursday.
